::: Red Rain :::

We took joy in the red rain
A promise of liberty,
Cocktail hours and
Free kisses.
Might as well have been stamped across our foreheads
The way the kisses kept coming
I remember when the red rains ceased.
The free bird does not stay free forever
Chains hold her back,
Shackles stop her flight.
The drought was painful.
No more late night scandal at the disco
Our feet couldn’t even fit into our dancing shoes.
Then one day in June
Dean tried to climb the mountain.
He did not know it had already been conquered
The enemy flag blowing in the wind
Clarence.
Time passed slowly
Each day longer than the last.
In December
When the white sky broke open
He reached the tunnel,
Squinting to see the dim light ahead
Fighting for his right to the light,
Two singular cries
One of joy
One of surprise
Return of the red rain.
