::: A More Perfect Union :::

There is no
love greater
than same sex love.
So said the Greeks
ruling the antiquities.
In the mayor's office,
two women exchanged vows.
For fifty years Del Martin
and Phyllis Lyon were shunned
by family and complete strangers.
Yet, their love for each other
transended the hatred.
They became that rarest of orchids
which opens at the light of truth.
Two women were married, today,
after fifty years of loving on the edge
of social acceptance and religious prejudice.
Two women in order to form a more perfect union.

Author Notes: On June 16, same sex marriage became a constitutional right protected by law in the state of California. Yet, the forces of homosexual hatred are currently mounting a campaign to change the state's constitution and end this right. Del and Phyllis are modern day hero's for equality and the continuing struggle for a more perfect union. I heard Del say over the radio something like, "Most people fall in love, get married, and hope to grow old together. For homosexuals, we fall in love, grow old together, and hope we can get married." I thought that Del (or was it Phyllis?) statement was truly profound. Wisdom I cannot ignore.
