Dawn in the valley,
what appears to be coastal fog
turns out to be smoke
blowing in from fifty miles away.
The air smells of ash
which brings the haunting awareness
of what comes with the breeze.
Fire could creep up on me
while I'm asleep. Forcing
me to pack the trailer
and head west to the coast.
The flames can consume the grass
but let's see it eat the beach.

You are an old flame
I danced with you years ago.
You smelled of charcoal
and liked to kiss my ears.
You brought your fire to bed
with a torched earth mentality.
You burned the house down
and forced me to flee
with only my books
and a change of clothes.
I hitched up the trailer
and headed to the coast.
Your flames can consume the grass
